Mx. Kit Morris
author of spec-fic, ya, and more!
Welcome! Welcome to new readers, old readers, prospective readers, and monsters alike. My name is Kit Morris, and I'm a nonbinary author from Florida who's always been drawn to the weird, the wonderful, the fantastical... and the genre-bending. If you want to learn more about my works, or about me, you've come to the right place...
Upcoming Works
Unearth
(Lovecraftian crossworlds horror-fantasy)River Horne is a young, closeted trans woman, out only to her friends online, still trapped at home while taking online college courses. Learning is an escape for her... as is playing Unearth Online, an immersive horror MMORPG based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. When she hears that the game is ending, she decides to play one final game up until the servers shut down for good; since it's ending on Halloween, and her main account is an "evil cultist" for friendly PvP, she wants to give any other players sticking it out to the end a fun little challenge. But the Dark Gods of Unearth have taken on a sort of life of their own, and they do not intend to die. Crawling towards true existence, by the time shutdown hits they have gathered enough power to warp their reality one final way... and bring the world of Unearth alive.Pulled into the formerly fictional world of the game, River has to decide what kind of person she wants to be as she searches for other players and explores a computer game world where the NPCs have gained sentience and monsters and powerful cultists really exist. And as she explores, she comes to realize that Dark really isn't the same as bad... and where true evil lies.
Squamous
(YA coming-of-age Lovecraftian fantasy adventure)When they move back to Florida with their mother and sister, Bex Gilman can't help feeling a little nervous. They haven't been there since their father left, they barely remember it, and they’re not sure if their Deep One extended family will like them; they aren't even as far along in their transformation into a full-fledged fish-person as their little sister! But not only are they given a warm welcome by their goff'n family, they also find themself quickly making new friends in what might be the new Mythos capital of the country. Their cousin Lucas Schell is just as queer as they are and a solid rock of support; the pretty and smart Madison Tate family is devoted to the Father of All Bats, so she can relate to fellow Mythos weirdos; young musician Izzie Jameson, Madison's best friend, currently has a Yithian in zir body, and zie's as bad with emotions as zie is unwilling to suppress them. And their new connections definitely promise to come in handy when they find what seems to be an injured baby shoggoth... one that's being hunted and may be in dire need of their family's help.
Act Scared!
(Contemporary ghostly horror-mystery romance)Marie Mannarelli doesn't believe in ghosts, but they do know how to fake it. They're still happy to use their ghost-hunting YouTube channel, Act Scared!, to investigate supposedly haunted theaters and ghostly actors—with the hope that they can break through into film or television themself, if they get big enough to be noticed. When they head to their newest investigation into the local Rose Theater and the ghost of actor Eric Strachota, however, Marie catches a few eyes in ways they hadn't been expecting. Anthony Cardis, successful businessman and passionate hobbiest stage director, wants Marie to stay on with his acting troupe due to their talent. Kate Cady, butch actress and stagehand and Eric's closest friend before he died, immediately takes a dislike to Marie and their "ghost hunt." Lin Rook, superstitious stage electrician, is intrigued by Marie's investigations and suspects that Eric's accidental death wasn't an accident after all...And then there's the silent masked figure dressed as the Red Death. A figure wearing the same costume that Eric Strachota had been wearing when he died. A figure that may be trying to tell Marie something... and definitely seems to be getting angrier. If thise Rose Theater really is haunted, they're going to have to figure it out fast, before someone else dies—at the hands of a vengeful ghost or a lurking murderer.

About the Author

My name is Kit Morris, and I have an eye for the fantastical and the improbable—in real life as well as in writing. I'm nonbinary with they/them pronouns and in my mid-thirties, and I've been drawn towards the unusual and the monstrous pretty much my entire life—with the earliest books I can remember loving being On Beyond Zebra by Dr. Seuss and How to Care for Your Monster by Normal Bridwell.I spend my time at my home in Florida, taking care of my four cats as I pursue an online degree in Creative Writing and English at Southern New Hampshire University; I also occasionally write for the the Creative Writing Review Club there! When I'm not writing for class, clubs, or just the fun of it, I'm reading, and when I'm not reading I'm going on walks through the Florida landscape (there's a national park with boardwalks over the swamp not that far from my house!), playing tabletop games, listening to music or singing.I have two tabletop roleplaying hacks published on itch.io, Children of Water and Land and They howl and grow claws, both Lovecraftian horror-fantasy about figuring out who one wants to be and how one wants to shape one's own life. This same genre is the subject of two of the novels I'm working on, but in all of my stories, the overarching theme is that of monsters—how very human they can be—and seeing the fantastical in what others might find frightening.
